It's up to us

A poem.

Perhaps we’re all the life that stars have ever known,
Or maybe distant worlds have civilizations of their own.
Yet time, the little time through which we see,
Makes us believe there’s more than you and me.

But in a universe that stretches far and wide,
Where constellations drift beyond our sight,
The dream of crossing stars begins to die,
A fading hope beneath an endless sky.

Light-years divide us from extraordinary things,
From distant worlds and all the hope they bring.
And yet, alone, we’ve reached beyond our dreams,
Defying limits no one fully sees.

If Earth, our home, is all we’ve ever known,
A fragile vessel drifting through the great unknown,
And we belong to an age that cannot yet depart,
Then all our distant journeys must begin within the heart.

We are the ones who might restore this place,
And someday sail beyond the bounds of space.
The ancient dream of humankind lives on,
To build a future long after we’re gone.

To think beyond the moment and the day,
To dream of distant centuries away.
To make tomorrow part of what we do,
And leave a world of possibilities anew.

It’s up to us, for no one else will come,
No distant savior, no celestial sun.
We only have each other, you and I,
Beneath the silence of an endless sky.

Intelligent beings, with so much left to give,
Protecting what it means for us to live.
And though we search for purpose everywhere,
Perhaps the answer simply isn’t there.

We do not know what meaning life may hold,
Or what the distant future will unfold.
And if you ask me what we’re meant to be,
I have no answer. What do you expect from me?
